Biography
Angela Smith is currently employed as a GIS Analyst in the Environmental Planning and Permitting division of CP&Y, Inc. in Austin, Texas. She was born and raised in Lorena, Texas and moved to San Marcos, Texas in 2008 to attend Texas State University. Here she discovered her love for global issues, processes, and trends, and consequently graduated with a Bachelor’s in International Relations in 2010.
Having always been one to spend hours absorbed in the contents of a map or globe, after graduation Angela was inclined to return to school to pursue a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems from Austin Community College. She recognized that her great attention to detail, perfectionism, visual eye, and love of maps were the building blocks to establishing a fulfilling career. GIS especially attracted her because of its use in a variety of industries. Angela has roughly 2.5 years of professional GIS experience in local government, first as an Intern at Travis County, and most recently at the Central Texas Council of Governments. While in the Central Texas area, she also taught an introductory GIS class at Temple College to keep her GIS skills fresh. Currently, Angela primarily manages all environmental-related data, mapping requests, and GIS processes to support the study of environmental impacts of various transportation projects.
On a more personal note, Angela is an avid traveler and has a continuous goal of traveling internationally as much as possible. Since 2008, she has traveled to England, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, France, Costa Rica, and Ireland in several separate trips. Besides travel, she enjoys the outdoors, especially hiking, geocaching, and enjoying time in the beautiful Texas rivers, and attempts to teach herself the fiddle in her spare time. She is also a proud Texan who loves Texas country music and two-stepping.
Angela is a true GIS nerd who loves solving problems, discovering trends, and making maps to show the results. She also enjoys letting her creativity show in her mapmaking, and considers it to be her form of art. She is interested in networking with fellow GIS professionals in order to enhance her GIS skillset and meet others who share her passion.
